Crazy!

I made a GREAT pull this weekend - another Sweet Spot hit (more on that in a later post) - so I started dreaming of an Albert Pujols auto. Went searching on eBay, found a few nice, reasonable possibilities, which I didn't end up bidding on, but also came across this:

2001 Albert Pujols Bowman Chrome Rookie RC 141/500 AUTO

From the one side of this auction, I'm thinking, "Damn, I'd love to have pulled that. Seven grand for a card! Probably from a $5 pack originally. If only...." The other side thinks, "Damn, seven grand for a card? I'd rather have a car than that. Or redo my basement! Or pay off some of my mortgage! Or even buy a case of Exquisite or Black or Sterling!"

Is there another card bubble in the offing?

(BTW, for $7k, I'd at least expect free shipping!)

2009 Bowman Chrome

So, my local card shop owner suckered me into buying a box, minus one pack, of 09 Bowman Chrome for $40. "Below cost!" he said. I thought my son is collecting that set, but later found out he is only collecting the base non-chrome set. #%(##(_%#&_!!

Se we bust it open for fun, and what do I get?

I don't know this guy. Hmmm, a Yankee. I can probably trade it for something half decent. Then my son tells me, "He's the guy who can pitch both righty and lefty!" I look on the back, and sure enough, check out the "Throws:" stat.

"BOTH"

That is something you rarely see. Pretty cool.

Then I check it out on eBay. It is selling for $30-40! Well, since I'm spending WAY too much on the SI autos and other things, I figure I need a little cash to replenish the Paypal account and keep my wife from being too suspicious of things coming in and not going out. So, if you are interested, I'm selling this card on eBay. Here is the link:

As for the rest of the box, I really like the simplicity of this year's design. Easy to read, good pictures, excellent quality. I'm a bit sick of WBC stuff, but it doesn't detract from the rest of the set since the design is identical to the base, except for the WBC logo.

The rest of the "hits" include another blue refractor, an orange refractor, an X-fractor, and 4 regular refractors (Kinsler, Cueta, Javy Vazquez, Kuo). Not a bad haul. No superstars, but a decent crowd. If you are interested in any of them, email me and let's work out a trade.

More on Kiner Sweet Spot Bat Barrel

Looking at Upper Deck's checklist for 2009 Sweet Spot, I figure that I got one of the better case hits from the product. There are only 15 players cards from the Classic Bat Barrel category, and only two 1/1's: DiMaggio and Gwynn.
  • 2009 CBBN-CK Charlie Keller 3 Yankees
  • 2009 CBBN-DW Dave Winfield 5 Yankees
  • 2009 CBBN-GB George Brett 5 Royals
  • 2009 CBBN-GC Gary Carter 3 Expos
  • 2009 CBBN-JB Johnny Bench 3 Reds
  • 2009 CBBN-JC Jose Canseco 5 Athletics
  • 2009 CBBN-JD Joe DiMaggio 1 Yankees
  • 2009 CBBN-KP Kirby Puckett 2 Twins
  • 2009 CBBN-NF Nellie Fox 3 White Sox
  • 2009 CBBN-OC Orlando Cepeda 4 Giants
  • 2009 CBBN-RJ Reggie Jackson 6 Yankees
  • 2009 CBBN-RK Ralph Kiner 2 Pirates
  • 2009 CBBN-TG Tony Gwynn 1 Padres
  • 2009 CBBN-VP Vada Pinson 2 Reds
  • 2009 CBBN-WS Willie Stargell 2 Pirates
Not bad! Out of all of these, I guess the DiMaggio, Fox, Keller and Kiner would be the best. The only thing better to pull as a case hit would have been the Cy Young, Ty Cobb or Walter Johnson cut signatures, all 1 of 1.

I'm not trying to gloat, but its hard not to when this is the best "hit" that I've ever pulled from a pack. I spent the day on Sunday investigating what to do with this card. I've shown it on The Bench, and have a few offers, but none that I feel is sufficient. I'm discussing it with someone now about a private sale locally, but I think my best bet would be to put it on eBay for a starting bid of $500 and a BIN of $1000.

Opinions? Any opinions would be appreciated.

eBay Snipers ought to be Shot!

I was all set to get all those Omar Vizquel cards from a very reputable dealer on eBay. I had my high price in, I was in the lead, then BOOM! In comes o***o at the very end of each and every one of the Vizquel auctions, and somehow manages to take every last one of them at the last second by $0.50. I'm not talking one or two auctions. I'm talking at least a dozen. Dammit! There were some GREAT Omar cards, lots of low numbers, some relics, some inserts, lots of parallels. Diamond Kings. Leaf Certified. Studio. You name it, it was on there.

My beef is: How the hell did he know what to bid? Is he using a sniping program? I don't know exactly how they work, but I would guess that, at the last 5 seconds of an auction, the program floods the auction with bids in increments until one wins. Does anyone know for certain how this bonehead was able to do that?

All in all, I bought one card - ONE CARD! - and lost out on at least 50 others. If I wasn't such a pacifist, I would search this guy out and string him up by his short hairs.

"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!"
