Trivia Contest, Day 4

That last question was a tough one for some, but it is right from a Ken Schrom's 1986 Topps card #110T. The answer is Sam McDowell, who had one putout in 1970. The way I verified that he was the last one was to check the baseball-reference.com, which has a listing for each team of each player that played a position in that year.

Captain Canuck and Cardboard Addiction both answered it correct, so they each have 4 points. I guess I'll have to ask some harder questions to separate the wheat from the chafe.

The next question is:

Jim Rice, who should be in the HOF, had 406 total bases in 1978. This was the highest total since WHO had HOW MANY in WHAT YEAR?

I think this will be only 1 point, since once you figure out the year or player, the rest will be easy. Good luck, and almost halfway there.

1948 Stanley Frank Musial 429. Wow, that's amazingly awesome. Only Sosa (twice) L. Gonzalez, Bonds and Larry Walker (only legitimate one of the bunch) have had 406 TB's since Rice.

Some no named guy called Joe DiMaggio had 418 in 1937. Thanks for this question. I'm a big Sox fan and learned today that Rice won the triple crown in 1974 for AAA Pawtucket. I wouldn't have learned that if I wasn't researching your question.

the wording on this one is kinda confusing as 17 players had 406 or more total bases before Rice did his thing in '78.
Babe Ruth had 457 in 1921 for the record, if that's what you're after...
technically, Jim Rice got 406 whch was the most since.... George Foster got 378 in 1977, would also be correct...
I'm confused, and my head hurts...
so I'll stop there...
