I'm not sure when it got bent. My son seems to think he may have done it, buy shouldn't the card have at least been taped to a piece of cardboard?
Would it make a difference to your answer if I told you the card is a Donruss Significant Signature Nolan Ryan autograph?
Should I ask for all my money back? Should I ask for some back? Should I regret not getting insurance? Should I bar my son from ever touching a mailer again?
UPDATE 12/11/2009: I emailed back and forth with the seller last night. He was VERY accommodating, which was great! He says that he ships like this all the time, but was more than willing to either refund my money, exchange the card for another one, or send something additional. I took option C, and he is sending me another auto as compensation. This time I asked him to sandwich the card in between some cardboard!

It's always possible you got scammed by the seller...I'd definitely ask for my money back first - unless you are sure you son did it in which case...
That's bad packaging. Go after the seller for a refund. Anyone who sells on ebay knows they are playing with fire doing that crap. Heck, every blogger I've traded with protects cards better than that.
It is the sellers responsibility to see that you get your card safely and securely. If the card you saw in the auction is not the card you received, ask for a refund to return it, partial refund to keep it.
And yeah, if your kid fubared it, you're s.o.l..
The toploader was bent?? Is this a seller with excellent feedback, or have there been other issues like this mentioned?
How do you bend a top loader? How old is your son?
Secondly, I probably wouldn't have posted this in case the seller sees this post and you try and get a refund.
This seller has a 100% feedback, and I don't know for certain what happened, but this should not have been packaged like that, regardless of what my son did!
My post office ladies like to bend things. Regardless, PayPal offers protection for things like this. There's nothing wrong with being an unsatisfied customer, and I say you should try to get your money back. Especially since Ryan autos don't come cheap?
Tough call... I would expect better packaging as well. Still, I can see a card saver possibly getting bent, but not a top loader.

I'm not sure how a toploader in a bubble mailer gets bent. While the seller could have done a better job packing the card, it sounds like he took reasonable precautions.
Next time, get insurance.
Definitely ask for your money back! With a card that valuable the seller is absolutely retarded not to care for it better. It pisses me off more than anything when a seller will charge a high price to ship two or three cards and then when they arrive it turns out that they aren't even in top loaders, they are just in a flimsy penny sleeve! It's like wtf man. If he doesn't give you your money back I would give scathing feedback, you can even leverage that when trying to get the money back. There is nothing that an ebay seller fears more than getting terrible feedback! Go into the situation with the attitude that you are right and you won't take no for an option. Usually the person alread knows that they were in the wrong, and by you calling them out on it, they will admit it fairly quickly.
If this helps technically the seller cant offer insurance for you to buy. Its supposed to be insured by the seller and its supposed to be included in the shipping price. If the seller packed it poorly and didnt insure it...then its the sellers fault and you should get all your $ back. Though I would leave the part out about your son possibly doing it.
When I sell cards with a toploader, I place the toploader in bubble wrap, and then in a bubble envelope. However, I do not use cardboard on top of the toploader. I have sent over 2,000 of these, and never had this problem. Toploaders are reasonably secure, pennysleeves are a different story.
